An exceptionally long, whip-like tail balanced the equally long neck of Diplodocus longus, one of the most elongated of all dinosaurs at around 25 meters. Despite that length, this sauropod herbivore was comparatively lightweight, near 14 tonnes, with a slender build and peg-like teeth suited to stripping foliage. Its tapering tail may have served in defense and possibly produced loud cracking sounds. Othniel Charles Marsh named the genus in 1878 from Canon City, Colorado, dating to the Late Jurassic, roughly 161 to 145 million years ago. Casts of its skeleton in museums worldwide have made it among the most familiar of all sauropods.
Diplodocus was one of the longest dinosaurs, with a remarkably long whip-like tail. It likely used its tail for defense and possibly to create sonic booms. Despite its enormous length, it was relatively lightweight for a sauropod.

Diet & Feeding
Diplodocus was a plant-eating dinosaur. Herbivores typically fed on ferns, cycads, conifers, and other vegetation available during their era. Many herbivorous dinosaurs developed specialized teeth and digestive systems for processing tough plant material.
Time Period
Diplodocus lived during the Jurassic Late period of the Mesozoic Era, approximately 161,5 to 145,0 million years ago.
One of the most iconic periods for dinosaurs. Giant sauropods like Brachiosaurus and Diplodocus roamed alongside predators like Allosaurus. Archaeopteryx, the earliest known bird, appeared. The Morrison Formation preserves an extraordinary fossil record from this time.
