Weighing approximately 400 g, it is a piscivore and invertebrate hunter of tidal mudflats, mangroves, and rice paddies. Fossil and subfossil material from Australia documents its Quaternary distribution. The pied heron is notable for its bold black-and-white adult plumage and habit of roosting colonially in mangrove trees.
