Balaeniceps rex, the shoebill, is a large carnivorous bird native to tropical East Africa including Uganda. Reaching over 1.2 m tall with a distinctive enormous shoe-shaped bill, it stalks lungfish and other large prey in papyrus swamps. Although alive today, subfossil shoebill material has been recovered, documenting its persistence in African wetland environments.
Diet & Feeding
