Balaenicipitidae

Balaenicipitidae

Balaenicipitidae is the avian family containing the shoebill (Balaeniceps rex) and its fossil relatives, with early records from Eocene or Oligocene deposits of Tunisia and Africa. These large carnivorous wading birds are characterized by their enormous hooked bill and belong to order Pelecaniformes. Fossil balaenicipitids suggest the family had a broader historical distribution.
