An extinct pigeon from Mauritius in the Indian Ocean, Columba thiriouxi is a herbivorous columbid known from subfossil bones. Its extinction likely accompanied the broader wave of island bird extinctions in Mauritius following Dutch, Portuguese, and later European colonisation. Mauritius was famously the home of the dodo, and harboured many other unique birds now lost.
Diet & Feeding
Columba thiriouxi was a plant-eating dinosaur. Herbivores typically fed on ferns, cycads, conifers, and other vegetation available during their era. Many herbivorous dinosaurs developed specialized teeth and digestive systems for processing tough plant material.
