Coturnix novaezelandiae

Coturnix novaezelandiae, the New Zealand quail, is an extinct quail (Phasianidae) endemic to the lowland grasslands and scrublands of both main islands of New Zealand. Weighing approximately 100–130 g, it was a ground-dwelling granivore and insectivore. Last reliably recorded in the 1870s, its extinction was driven by introduced predators (cats, mustelids, rats) and wholesale burning of native grasslands for sheep farming. It is one of New Zealand's most recently extinct birds.
