Dendragapus nanus

Dendragapus nanus

†Dendragapus nanus ('dwarf tree grouse') is an extinct diminutive species of grouse from Pleistocene fossil sites in the United States. Smaller than its living relatives, this galliform may have inhabited denser forest understories. Its discovery provides comparative data on body-size variation in North American grouse lineages during the Quaternary.
