†Diatryma gigantea is a large flightless bird from the Eocene of North America, now generally synonymized with Gastornis. Standing ~1.75 m tall and weighing ~100 kg, its massive hooked beak may have been used for cracking hard seeds or, alternatively, predation. Its classification as herbivore or apex carnivore remains debated among paleontologists.
Diet & Feeding
Diatryma gigantea was a meat-eating predator. Carnivorous dinosaurs were active hunters or scavengers, equipped with sharp teeth and claws for catching and consuming prey. They occupied the top of the food chain in their ecosystems.
