Diatryma gigantea

†Diatryma gigantea is a large flightless bird from the Eocene of North America, now generally synonymized with Gastornis. Standing ~1.75 m tall and weighing ~100 kg, its massive hooked beak may have been used for cracking hard seeds or, alternatively, predation. Its classification as herbivore or apex carnivore remains debated among paleontologists.
