†Dromaius arleyekweke is an extinct dwarf emu from the Pleistocene of central Australia, described from Arleya Creek fossil deposits. Significantly smaller than the living emu, this ratite likely inhabited arid interior Australia. Its discovery adds to the record of insular and continental gigantism/dwarfism in Australian megafaunal birds before the Holocene extinctions.
Diet & Feeding
Dromaius arleyekweke was a meat-eating predator. Carnivorous dinosaurs were active hunters or scavengers, equipped with sharp teeth and claws for catching and consuming prey. They occupied the top of the food chain in their ecosystems.
