Dynamopterus velox

Dynamopterus velox

Dynamopterus velox is an extinct bird of prey (Accipitridae or Falconidae) from Eocene–Oligocene deposits of France. Its name means 'swift powerful wing,' reflecting an inferred fast-flying, aerial predator lifestyle. A carnivore hunting small birds and mammals, it inhabited the warm subtropical forests of Palaeogene Europe. The discovery of this taxon contributes to understanding the early Palaeogene radiation of diurnal raptors following the end-Cretaceous extinction event.
