Meleagris richmondi

Meleagris richmondi

Otus mauli was an extinct scops owl from Quaternary Madeira, larger than any modern Macaronesian owl. Island owls frequently evolve larger body sizes ('island gigantism') due to reduced competition from other predators, but this makes them particularly vulnerable to novel predators.
