Chascacocolius cacicirostris

Chascacocolius cacicirostris is an extinct mousebird (Coliidae) from the Eocene Messel Pit of Germany, one of the most productive Lagerstätten for early Palaeogene birds. Its species name refers to a bill resembling that of a cacique (oropendola). An arboreal frugivore, it fed on figs and soft fruits in the subtropical Eocene forests of central Europe. Exquisitely preserved Messel specimens retain feather outlines and stomach contents.
