Chascacocolius oscitans

Chascacocolius oscitans

Chascacocolius oscitans is an extinct mousebird (Coliidae) from Eocene deposits of Denmark, demonstrating that this family, today restricted to sub-Saharan Africa, once ranged across Europe. An arboreal frugivore, it fed on berries and soft vegetation in the warm Eocene forests of northern Europe. The species name oscitans ('yawning') alludes to the wide gape of its bill. Its discovery extends the European Eocene Coliidae radiation northward to Scandinavia.
