Chascacocolius oscitans is an extinct mousebird (Coliidae) from Eocene deposits of Denmark, demonstrating that this family, today restricted to sub-Saharan Africa, once ranged across Europe. An arboreal frugivore, it fed on berries and soft vegetation in the warm Eocene forests of northern Europe. The species name oscitans ('yawning') alludes to the wide gape of its bill. Its discovery extends the European Eocene Coliidae radiation northward to Scandinavia.
Diet & Feeding
Chascacocolius oscitans was a plant-eating dinosaur. Herbivores typically fed on ferns, cycads, conifers, and other vegetation available during their era. Many herbivorous dinosaurs developed specialized teeth and digestive systems for processing tough plant material.
