Chelychelynechen quassus

Chelychelynechen quassus, the turtle-jawed moa-nalo, is an extinct flightless duck (Anatidae) from the Hawaiian Islands, known from Quaternary bone deposits. One of the four 'moa-nalo' giant goose-like ducks, it possessed a turtle-like bill adapted for crushing fibrous vegetation. Weighing up to 7 kg, it was the dominant herbivore of Hawaiian forest understoreys before human arrival. Extinction followed Polynesian colonisation ~800 years ago.
