Chendytes is a genus of extinct flightless diving ducks (Anatidae) from the Pleistocene and Holocene coasts of California. These robust, penguin-like birds were wing-propelled divers that fed on marine invertebrates and fish along the Pacific coast. Their flightlessness made them easy prey for early Californian peoples, contributing to their extinction around 2,400 years ago. The genus represents a remarkable convergence with seabirds within Anatidae.
Diet & Feeding
Chendytes was a plant-eating dinosaur. Herbivores typically fed on ferns, cycads, conifers, and other vegetation available during their era. Many herbivorous dinosaurs developed specialized teeth and digestive systems for processing tough plant material.
