Buteo hoffstetteri

Buteo hoffstetteri

† Buteo hoffstetteri is an extinct hawk of the genus Buteo known from fossil material discovered in Ecuador, named in honor of French palaeontologist Robert Hoffstetter. A carnivorous soaring raptor, it would have occupied open or forest-edge habitats of South America during the Pleistocene. Its Ecuadorian provenance adds to the record of extinct raptors from the Andes region and provides data on the historical biogeography of the Buteo lineage in South America.
