Calidris binagadensis

Calidris binagadensis

† Calidris binagadensis is an extinct sandpiper from the Pleistocene asphalt deposits of Binagady, Azerbaijan. A member of the shorebird genus Calidris (family Scolopacidae), it was a carnivorous wader feeding on invertebrates in coastal and wetland habitats. The Binagady tar pits have yielded a rich Late Pleistocene fauna, and this sandpiper species documents the avian diversity of the Caspian region during the last glacial period.
