Capella anthonyi

† Capella anthonyi is an extinct snipe of the genus Capella, known from fossil material of uncertain precise provenance. Snipes (family Scolopacidae) are carnivorous, long-billed shorebirds specialized for probing soft substrates to detect earthworms and invertebrates. Named in honor of ornithologist Alfred Webster Anthony, this species contributes to the fossil record of Scolopacidae diversity in the Quaternary or Neogene and helps trace the evolutionary history of the snipe lineage.
