Caracara creightoni

Caracara creightoni

† Caracara creightoni, Creighton's caracara, was a large extinct caracara raptor from the Pleistocene and Holocene of the Bahamas and Cuba. Significantly larger than the living crested caracara, it was a powerful carnivore and scavenger that co-existed with the Caribbean's Pleistocene megafauna. The species became extinct following the arrival of humans in the Caribbean. It is named in honor of its discoverer and represents the Caribbean's lost raptor diversity.
