<dinofyi-dinosaur slug="kentrosaurus"></dinofyi-dinosaur>A smaller African relative of Stegosaurus, Kentrosaurus aethiopicus carried more spikes than plates along its back and tail. This herbivore measured about 4.5 meters and near 700 kilograms and bore a prominent spine projecting from each shoulder that added to its defenses. Edwin Hennig described it in 1915 from the Tendaguru beds of Tanzania, one of the richest Late Jurassic fossil sites in Africa, dating to roughly 161 to 145 million years ago. Its heavily armed rear half would have deterred contemporary predators, and its mix of plates and spikes helps illustrate the range of defensive ornamentation among the plated stegosaurs.
