Afrocygnus chauvireae

Afrocygnus chauvireae

Afrocygnus chauvireae is an extinct swan from the Miocene (~8 Ma) of Chad, central Africa. A large waterfowl related to modern swans, this discovery documented the presence of Cygnus-like birds in Equatorial Africa during the Miocene. Named by Mourer-Chauviré and Andossa in 2001, it highlights the once-wider distribution of swan-like birds across Africa.
