Alexandrinus echo, the Mauritius Parakeet (also known as Echo Parakeet), is the last surviving endemic parrot of the Mascarene Islands. About 36-42cm long and bright green, it was reduced to fewer than 10 individuals by the 1980s. Intensive conservation efforts involving captive breeding and nest management have brought numbers back to over 600 birds by the 2020s — a remarkable conservation success story.
Diet & Feeding
Alexandrinus echo was a meat-eating predator. Carnivorous dinosaurs were active hunters or scavengers, equipped with sharp teeth and claws for catching and consuming prey. They occupied the top of the food chain in their ecosystems.
