Callovosaurus leedsi

Callovosaurus leedsi

† Callovosaurus leedsi was a small iguanodontian ornithopod dinosaur from the Middle Jurassic (Callovian stage) of England, making it one of the oldest known iguanodontians. Known from a single femur collected by Alfred Leeds, it was a bipedal or facultatively bipedal herbivore browsing on low-growing vegetation. Its Callovian age places it near the origin of the ornithopod lineage that would eventually give rise to the larger hadrosaurs and iguanodontids of the Cretaceous.

Diet & Feeding

Herbivore

Callovosaurus leedsi was a plant-eating dinosaur. Herbivores typically fed on ferns, cycads, conifers, and other vegetation available during their era. Many herbivorous dinosaurs developed specialized teeth and digestive systems for processing tough plant material.

Time Period

Jurassic Middle Mesozoic Era

Callovosaurus leedsi lived during the Jurassic Middle period of the Mesozoic Era, approximately 174.7 to 161.5 million years ago.

Dinosaur diversity continued to increase, with the evolution of large sauropods and diverse theropods. Stegosaurs first appeared, and the supercontinent Pangaea was breaking apart.
