An extinct snipe from New Caledonia, Coenocorypha neocaledonica extends the known range of the endemic New Zealand snipe genus into the Pacific island chain. A carnivorous probing wader, its occurrence in New Caledonia confirms that Coenocorypha species once inhabited multiple Pacific islands before human colonisation triggered widespread extinctions of island bird faunas.
Diet & Feeding
Coenocorypha neocaledonica was a meat-eating predator. Carnivorous dinosaurs were active hunters or scavengers, equipped with sharp teeth and claws for catching and consuming prey. They occupied the top of the food chain in their ecosystems.
