Compsognathus longipes

About the size of a chicken, Compsognathus longipes ranks among the smallest known non-avian dinosaurs, roughly one meter long and about 3 kilograms. This slight, fast carnivore lived in the Late Jurassic, roughly 161 to 145 million years ago. One specimen was found with a lizard still preserved in its stomach, giving direct evidence of what it ate. Johann A. Wagner described it in 1859 from Bavaria, Germany, and it was among the first dinosaurs known from a nearly complete skeleton, a discovery that helped early researchers picture these animals as small, quick, and active rather than sluggish giants.
