Archaeospheniscus

Archaeospheniscus

†Archaeospheniscus was an extinct penguin genus from Eocene to Oligocene deposits of New Zealand and Antarctica. A medium-sized piscivore intermediate in size between small modern penguins and the giant Eocene forms, it contributed to the transition from giant to modern-sized penguins during the Oligocene cooling. Several species are known from New Zealand's rich Cenozoic penguin fossil record.
