† Burhinus nanus was a small, extinct species of thick-knee known from subfossil material from the Bahamas. As a member of the family Burhinidae, it was a carnivorous bird feeding on invertebrates and small prey. Its diminutive size relative to mainland thick-knees likely reflects insular dwarfism, a widespread evolutionary trend among Caribbean island-dwelling birds. Habitat loss and human arrival likely contributed to its extinction.
Diet & Feeding
Burhinus nanus was a meat-eating predator. Carnivorous dinosaurs were active hunters or scavengers, equipped with sharp teeth and claws for catching and consuming prey. They occupied the top of the food chain in their ecosystems.
