An extinct flightless goose from New Zealand, Cnemiornis calcitrans ('kicker') was among the largest waterfowl known from the Holocene. Found on both North and South Islands, this herbivorous bird grazed alongside moa in open habitats. Its powerful legs may have been used defensively, but it could not withstand hunting by Polynesian settlers.
Diet & Feeding
Cnemiornis calcitrans was a plant-eating dinosaur. Herbivores typically fed on ferns, cycads, conifers, and other vegetation available during their era. Many herbivorous dinosaurs developed specialized teeth and digestive systems for processing tough plant material.
