†Ara autochthones was an extinct macaw from the Caribbean region, known from subfossil and archaeological remains. A large-bodied parrot with a powerful hooked bill for cracking nuts and hard seeds, it inhabited tropical forest. Driven to extinction by hunting and habitat destruction following indigenous and later European settlement of the Caribbean islands, it represents the formerly greater macaw diversity of the New World islands.
