† Butorides virescens maculatus is an extinct subspecies of the green heron (Butorides virescens), a small piscivorous heron of the family Ardeidae. Green herons are skilled stalkers of shallow aquatic environments, feeding on fish, frogs, and invertebrates; they are among the few birds documented using bait to attract prey. This fossil subspecies is known from limited material, representing a now-extinct population of an otherwise widespread species.
Diet & Feeding
Butorides virescens maculatus was a fish-eating dinosaur. Piscivores typically lived near water sources and had specialized adaptations such as elongated snouts and conical teeth for catching fish.
