Coturnix lignorum

Coturnix lignorum

Coturnix lignorum is an extinct quail (Phasianidae) from Quaternary deposits of Portugal and possibly the wider Iberian Peninsula. Its species name references wooded habitats (lignum, wood), suggesting it favoured scrubland or woodland edges. A ground-dwelling granivore and insectivore, it shared its habitat with larger galliformes in Pleistocene Iberia. Its disappearance may be linked to late Pleistocene climate shifts and megafaunal turnover.
