Giganotosaurus

Rivaling Tyrannosaurus in sheer size, Giganotosaurus carolinii was one of the largest terrestrial predators ever, about 12.5 meters, some 3.7 meters at the hip, and an estimated 6,800 kilograms. Its skull was longer and narrower than that of Tyrannosaurus, with a likely weaker bite but a wider gape suited to slashing wounds. Rodolfo Coria and Leonardo Salgado described this carnivore in 1993 from Patagonia, Argentina, dating to the Late Cretaceous, roughly 100 to 66 million years ago. As a carcharodontosaurid, it belonged to a different predatory lineage than the tyrannosaurs, showing that giant size evolved more than once among theropods.
