Micrathene is a genus of tiny owls containing the Elf Owl (Micrathene whitneyi), the world's lightest owl at ~40g and 12-14cm tall. Found in the southwestern USA and Mexico, it nests in cacti and tree cavities. Though primarily living today, fossil species extend the genus into the Pleistocene of North America.
