A medium-sized piscivore-omnivore standing about 69cm, it inhabits freshwater wetlands across Africa, Asia, and Australasia. Subfossil bones from Malagasy lake and swamp deposits document the prehistoric avifauna of Madagascar before major habitat alterations.
