Argentavis magnificens

†Argentavis magnificens was the largest known flying bird, a condor-like teratornis from the late Miocene of Argentina. With a wingspan estimated at 6–7m and a body weight of 70–80kg, it soared on thermal updrafts across the Pampas. A carnivore-scavenger feeding on large carcasses, it is known from bones discovered in Buenos Aires Province and described by Campbell and Tonni in 1980.
