Coucals are large, ground-dwelling cuckoos that forage for insects, small vertebrates, and invertebrates in dense vegetation. This ancient species from southern France documents the early presence of the coucal lineage in Europe during the Paleogene, contributing to the study of Cuculiformes evolution and the early colonization of Europe by modern bird families.
