† Centropus antiquus is an extinct species of coucal (genus Centropus, family Cuculidae) from Eocene or Oligocene deposits of France. Coucals are large, ground-dwelling cuckoos that forage for insects, small vertebrates, and invertebrates in dense vegetation. This ancient species from southern France documents the early presence of the coucal lineage in Europe during the Paleogene, contributing to the study of Cuculiformes evolution and the early colonization of Europe by modern bird families.
Diet & Feeding
Centropus antiquus primarily fed on insects and other small invertebrates. Insectivorous dinosaurs were typically small-bodied and agile, with adaptations suited for catching small prey.
