Egretta picata, the pied heron, is a small arderid heron (Ardeidae) native to coastal northern Australia and parts of southern New Guinea. Weighing approximately 400 g, it is a piscivore and invertebrate hunter of tidal mudflats, mangroves, and rice paddies. Fossil and subfossil material from Australia documents its Quaternary distribution. The pied heron is notable for its bold black-and-white adult plumage and habit of roosting colonially in mangrove trees.
