Anachronornis anhimops

Anachronornis anhimops

Anachronornis anhimops is an extinct bird from the Eocene (~45 Ma) of Messel, Germany. Its name means 'out-of-time bird' — it had anatomical features resembling screamers (Anhimidae) at an unexpectedly early age. The exceptional preservation of the Messel oil shale site has yielded complete skeletons with feathers, making it one of the most complete Eocene birds known.
