Anas soporata, the Marianas Mallard, is an extinct flightless duck that inhabited Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands. A large, dark-plumaged mallard relative, it became extinct in the early 20th century (last confirmed record: 1981). Hunting pressure and habitat loss drove its decline, compounded by the invasion of brown tree snakes on Guam after WWII.
Diet & Feeding
Anas soporata was a plant-eating dinosaur. Herbivores typically fed on ferns, cycads, conifers, and other vegetation available during their era. Many herbivorous dinosaurs developed specialized teeth and digestive systems for processing tough plant material.
