Coturnix centensis

Coturnix centensis

Coturnix centensis is an extinct quail (Phasianidae) known from Quaternary subfossil remains on the Cape Verde Islands, off the west coast of Africa. A ground-dwelling bird, it foraged on seeds and invertebrates in dry grasslands and shrublands. Its extinction likely resulted from habitat clearance, introduced predators, and hunting following Portuguese colonisation in the 15th century. The species name references the Cape Verde archipelago's central Atlantic location.
