Cygnopterus

Cygnopterus

Cygnopterus is an extinct genus of large swan-like waterfowl (Anatidae) known from Neogene deposits of Asia and Europe. A grazing herbivore of freshwater lakes and rivers, it fed on aquatic vegetation and grasses. The genus name means 'swan-winged,' reflecting its large wingspan and presumed migratory capability. Several species are distributed across Eurasia, suggesting widespread Neogene dispersal by this lineage before the Quaternary climate oscillations.
