Cygnus olor

Cygnus olor

Cygnus olor, the mute swan, is the heaviest flying bird native to Europe, with males weighing up to 15 kg and spanning 2.4 m. A herbivore of freshwater lakes, rivers, and estuaries, it feeds on submerged aquatic plants using its long flexible neck. Fossil remains are known from Pleistocene deposits across Eurasia, including Greece and the Caucasus. Its iconic arched-wing territorial display and orange-red bill with black knob are among the most recognisable characteristics of European waterfowl.
