Cygnus paloregonus

Cygnus paloregonus

Cygnus paloregonus is an extinct swan (Anatidae) from Pliocene and Pleistocene deposits of the western United States, known from Oregon, Idaho, and California. One of the largest fossil swans from North America, it may have attained sizes comparable to the extant trumpeter swan (C. buccinator). A grazing and aquatic herbivore, it inhabited the extensive lake systems of the Great Basin and Columbia Plateau during the warmer Pliocene. Its remains are associated with diverse Neogene megafauna assemblages.
