Acanthisitta chloris, the Rifleman, is the sole surviving species of the ancient New Zealand wren family Acanthisittidae — one of the most basal lineages of passerine birds. Tiny at ~6cm long, these insectivorous birds evolved in isolation for ~80 million years. Their lineage represents the earliest split in the passerine tree of life.
Diet & Feeding
Acanthisitta chloris was a meat-eating predator. Carnivorous dinosaurs were active hunters or scavengers, equipped with sharp teeth and claws for catching and consuming prey. They occupied the top of the food chain in their ecosystems.
