Aethia barnesi is an extinct auklet from the Pliocene (~3-4 Ma) of California, USA. A small alcid seabird closely related to living auklets of the North Pacific, it was named by Howard in 1968. Known from the San Diego Formation, it represents an early member of the diverse Aethia auklet lineage that dominates Bering Sea seabird colonies today.
