Aimophila ruficeps

Aimophila ruficeps, the Rufous-crowned Sparrow, is a living passerine bird of arid and semi-arid scrublands from the southwestern USA through Mexico. About 14-15cm long, it is identified by its rufous crown and dark malar stripe. Although primarily living, fossil relatives of sparrows from the Pliocene and Pleistocene document the ancient history of this North American sparrow lineage.
