Alca ausonia is an extinct auk from the Pliocene (~3 Ma) of Italy. A medium-sized alcid seabird of the North Atlantic and Mediterranean, it was recovered from Pliocene marine deposits. Its discovery documents the ancient distribution of Alca auks in the Mediterranean basin before the cooling climates of the Pleistocene restricted their range to northern waters.
Diet & Feeding
Alca ausonia was a meat-eating predator. Carnivorous dinosaurs were active hunters or scavengers, equipped with sharp teeth and claws for catching and consuming prey. They occupied the top of the food chain in their ecosystems.
