Alca ausonia

Alca ausonia

Alca ausonia is an extinct auk from the Pliocene (~3 Ma) of Italy. A medium-sized alcid seabird of the North Atlantic and Mediterranean, it was recovered from Pliocene marine deposits. Its discovery documents the ancient distribution of Alca auks in the Mediterranean basin before the cooling climates of the Pleistocene restricted their range to northern waters.
