Anthropodyptes gilli

Anthropodyptes gilli

†Anthropodyptes gilli was an extinct giant penguin from Eocene or Oligocene Australia. A large flightless diving seabird and piscivore, it contributed to the remarkable early Cenozoic diversification of penguins in the Southern Ocean. Its Australian fossils provide evidence that early penguin evolution was not restricted to New Zealand and Antarctica but extended across Australasian waters.
