†Argentavis magnificens was the largest known flying bird, a condor-like teratornis from the late Miocene of Argentina. With a wingspan estimated at 6–7m and a body weight of 70–80kg, it soared on thermal updrafts across the Pampas. A carnivore-scavenger feeding on large carcasses, it is known from bones discovered in Buenos Aires Province and described by Campbell and Tonni in 1980.
Diet & Feeding
Argentavis magnificens was a meat-eating predator. Carnivorous dinosaurs were active hunters or scavengers, equipped with sharp teeth and claws for catching and consuming prey. They occupied the top of the food chain in their ecosystems.
