An extinct insectivorous woodpecker of the genus Colaptes, Colaptes oceanicus was a member of the flicker lineage once inhabiting an oceanic island. Woodpeckers of this genus probe bark and soil for invertebrates. Its island occurrence and subsequent extinction reflect the vulnerability of insular woodpecker populations to habitat disruption and introduced species.
Diet & Feeding
Colaptes oceanicus primarily fed on insects and other small invertebrates. Insectivorous dinosaurs were typically small-bodied and agile, with adaptations suited for catching small prey.
